She was one of my fave clients… late-50’s, on-fire for being fit and active well into her post menopausal years, wise in all the holistic approaches to healthy living. She was an incredible inspiration to all of us!
But I began to notice a pattern. She would work out, yes, but there was an underlying vibe, a subtle unease about her as we approached each sesh. It was almost like she was holding her breath throughout the workout, just “waiting for that other shoe to fall.”
I asked a couple questions. I listened. She unpacked.
Then I began to see it. Underlying her best efforts – organic food, home-prepared meals, supplements, holistic practitioners, research galore, yoga, lifting weights, smatters of cardio – there was a beast.
And this beast whispered: “Work out or else… eat well or else… do all ‘the right stuff’ or else…”
She was approaching her health from fear. Fear was her motivator.
FEAR egged her on. She lived in that pointy-edged space of “I’m scared to death about aging, experiencing a loss of youth, becoming less capable.” No wonder she had difficulty breathing during our sessions. Of course her body was tight, her low back often tweaked, her lungs struggling to breathe. She was listening to Fear. Her motivation was fear: fear of loss, fear of aging, fear of the unknown.
Understandable. No judgment here.
But is there are more effective way she could have been approaching LIVING? Her stance was fear of dying…. But what if she chose joy of living? What if she chose LOVE OF SELF as her motivation for all the ways she took care of herself?
There is a different vibration that exists when we meet life from the space of SELF-LOVE rather than fear-of-death or fear-of-not-good-enough. How about we meet each other there?
