As I do every New Year’s Eve, I watched It’s A Wonderful Life. (If you have yet to see this timeless classic, run-don’t-walk… it’s a keeper!)
“God” is speaking to Clarence, Angel Second Class, about his mission on earth: George Bailey, the nicest guy ever, is standing on the edge of a bridge, preparing to jump and end his life.
Clarence: What’s wrong with him? Is he sick?
God: Worse. He’s discouraged.
Hmmmm. Being discouraged is worse than being sick?
Discouragement: a lack of confidence or enthusiasm; dispiritedness
For my whole life, I’ve found myself battling discouragement. Lately, I’m healing. Deeply healing. But it certainly has been a large part of my journey, this discouragement thing.
Synonyms include disappointment and low spirits
Intrigues me that discouragement and lack of adequate spirit coincide. Which led me to look up “spirit”….
Spirit: the nonphysical part of a person which is the seat of emotions and character; the soul
Synonyms include inner being, inner self, essential being
So, discouragement equals not enough inner self?
Perhaps it’s not so much lack of inner being and more lack of awareness and attention to that inner self…. A forgetting of that essential being, that soul…. In all its perfection, divinity, awesomeness.
Lately, if I find myself becoming discouraged, I ask myself if I’ve forgotten who I am, the wonderfulness that is The Essential Me. And Us. All of Us. Oftentimes, the answer is “well, yes, yes I have.”
And I then begin to encourage myself. “Hey, you! You got this! Remember who you are, the Power that resides within you!” “You are Wisdom; you are Peace; you are Holy.” “Breathe. Hang on to what’s most important; let go of non-essentials.”
Reminding myself of this Truth helps me see Power and Purpose rather than Problem.
DISCOURAGEMENT is a life-taker – worse than sickness.
And so it is with George Bailey who has decided that the world would be a better place without him. Moreover, George believes it would be better if he’d never even been born. Clarence’s mission, then, is to show George exactly what the world would look like sans George’s unique vibe.
The world is not in fact better off. Not by a long-shot. In the midst of his discouragement, George forgot something: people love him. He is cherished. In the messiness of living in this low vibration of an earthsuit called skin, George forgot his wonderfulness. His heart saw only failure – discouragement – when the love of his family and friends was right there all along.
Clarence gave him the opportunity to see the Truth: his troubles were temporary and fleeting; his essential self was loved and moved in power because of Love.
So next time you’re feeling discouraged, remember that it’s helping you to see that you’ve forgotten who you are. You’ve got the opportunity right then and there to remember that You are divine stuff. And you are loved. Cherished. Treasured.
And that the world is way better off because of YOUR unique vibe in it. Ah, it is indeed A Wonderful Life.
Energiegal here… Love works. LIFT the vibe of our world.
