I did something incredibly brave today. Downright bold.
I asked for an hour.
I said, “hey, I need an hour.”
Just like that.
Ya know what? My daughter and husband stepped up and helped me out. My whole body needed a release of adrenaline on the tready… but my new puppy was in need of constant care. My husband took my Gia out for a half hour walk and my daughter watched Gia while putting on her makeup. (clearly, on herself… though Gia with makeup on would be kinda funny cute too.)
And I ran. The pup barked a few times and a voice in my head said, “shouldn’t you be doing something to help them? Off the tready, you’ve been beckoned.” But I remained on that tready and listened harder to hear the voice of Truth: “you deserve this hour; take it; they’ll survive without you for an hour; enjoy, run, heal.”
How about you? Do you take the time for yourself that you need?
I really do know how difficult it can be to find the time for yourself. I have five children and work full time. I’m super duper blessed to be married to a guy who is willing and able to carry a load of the work. We’re a team. Big time yay!
Taking the time for yourself starts with believing that you are worthy to take that time for yourself. That self-love is the best kind of love there is! Do you think that?
Do you know that loving yourself first is the fastest way to taking care of everyone else around you? Sounds counterproductive, doesn’t it?
But if the plane is going down, we’re advised to put the oxygen mask on ourselves first and then onto those around us…. We need to be breathing!
So it is with life. Care of self first.
What would this look like for you?
Time to read a book?
Quiet time to chat with a friend?
A bubble bath?
Time sitting on the porch?
A quiet walk in the woods?
Listen, the knowing that you deserve this time, that you are worthy of personal space, is the first step to then allowing it to happen. Before you can SAY “hey, I need an hour” you must THINK in your mind “hey, I need an hour” — and before that even, you must FEEL in your heart “hey, I am worth an hour to do something I want to do for me.”
This is a practice. It doesn’t just happen overnight. We grow into it. It’s a change of heart, followed by a change of mind, and finally a change of action.
If no one has ever told you, then allow me to be the first:
HEY, YOU NEED AN HOUR. (And you deserve it. You’re worth it.)
