“Oz never did give nothing to the tin man that he didn’t, didn’t already have….”
Tin Man, America
There are so many interpretations of this song – and I don’t want to get in too deep with it here. That’s not the purpose of my comments today.
But this line just stuck out to me as I worked out this morning: OZ NEVER DID GIVE NOTHING TO THE TIN MAN THAT HE DIDN’T ALREADY HAVE.
Most of us know the story of The Wizard of Oz. Dorothy, the Cowardly Lion, the Scarecrow, and the Tin Man traveled together to see the Wizard of Oz who they hoped would grant them their greatest need: “home”, courage, smarts, and a heart.
*****The only one who was along for the ride, knowing he had everything he needed, was Toto. Damn, dogs are just so smart!*****
Intimidated, terrified, they assembled before the Wizard and made their requests, only to be turned away. Oh, the disappointment! Such devastation!
In their desperation, they determined to return.
Dorothy discovered she was wearing the way home.
The Cowardly Lion summoned all his courage.
The Scarecrow utilized his wits.
The Tin Man displayed his heart.
They all had everything they desired all along:
How about you?
What is it that YOU are seeking?
What is it that YOU desire?
Like Dorothy, we belong! Rejection, abandonment, loneliness – feelings, but not the truth.
Like the Lion, we are bold! Courageous! Fear, anxiety, doubt – feelings, but not the truth.
Like the Scarecrow, we are intelligent! Brilliant, even! Stupid, ignorant, dull – feelings, but not the truth.
Like the Tin Man, we feel! We are relational! Shallow, apathetic, hateful – feelings, but not the truth.
The Wizard did not in fact have the ability to grant them their greatest wishes. He was but a man. Like them. In seeing his humanity, the four recognized that he was no more special or powerful than anyone else. Including themselves!
From this space of “level-ground”, everyone hears the Truth: they have everything they’ve been looking for already. Everything they desire is already within them.
If I ever go looking for my heart’s desire again, I won’t look any further than my own back yard. Because if it isn’t there, I never really lost it to begin with! Is that right? – Dorothy
You’ve always had the power my dear, you just had to learn it for yourself. – Glinda the Good Witch
